Character Set Update – MinimOSD
The problem:
The on screen display (OSD) characters from the Hobbyking Minim OSD v1.1 appear garbled.
After hours of trying different firmware and character set combinations with no luck, I watched this video and at seven minutes in he explains that both sides of the board need to be powered for the character update to work. I was thinking "what the hell, how is this not stated on the instructions page!" Â Actually it is, right here in black and white. The point is, if your Minim OSD lights don't look like the picture below, the character set update probably ain't going to work.

Be sure to check that the analog part of the Minimosd ahs 5V !
I first powered the Minimosd through the FTDI ( with the two soldered blobs to power also the analog part)
The problam that in fact the FTDI delivered only 3.3V : this was enogh for the ATMEL 328 ( digital part) : update of FW was OK, positionning of controls on OSD ok, …
BUT, the charset was not updated correctly, becise it resideds in the MAX7456 chip, that NEEDS 5V to memorize the charset !!
Powering the minimosd with an FTDI 5V resolved the issue 🙂
